The Premise

What holds a nation together, when nothing forces it to stay?

America’s DNA traces the ideas that have carried the American premise from the first crossings to the present day: consent, rights, and the ongoing argument over who “We the People” includes. It is character-driven, evidence-grounded, and written for readers rather than specialists.

The book unfolds across four parts, following the premise from its founding-era origins through the long, unfinished work of living up to it. Details on structure, chapters, and publication will appear here as the manuscript nears completion.

The Author

Barrett Holt

Barrett Holt learned to read the historical record the hard way, by finding his own family in it. For more than half a century he has worked directly with original records such as census rolls, land deeds, and court ledgers, holding every family story to the same standard: what can be proven, and what cannot.

He is not an academic historian and does not pretend to be. His discipline came from work where getting the facts wrong had consequences, in emergency medicine, business, engineering, financial services, and technology. A Navy veteran from a family that has served since the Revolution, he wrote America’s DNA for the country those generations served.

He lives on the Gulf Coast with his wife, Betty. They met while both serving in the Navy and have been married for nearly fifty years.
