The Premise

What holds a nation together, when nothing forces it to stay?

America’s DNA traces the ideas that have carried the American premise from the first crossings to the present day: consent, rights, and the ongoing argument over who “We the People” includes. It is character-driven, evidence-grounded, and written for readers rather than specialists.

The book unfolds across four parts, following the premise from its founding-era origins through the long, unfinished work of living up to it. Details on structure, chapters, and publication will appear here as the manuscript nears completion.

The Author

Barrett Holt

Barrett Holt has spent eight decades never quite mastering the art of sitting still. He has worked in emergency medicine, owned businesses, built houses and computers, written software from black-and-white text screens to AI research, spent years behind a morning radio microphone, raced sailboats competitively, flown airplanes, and logged miles underwater as a certified advanced scuba diver. He has traveled to 48 states and lived in fourteen.

A Navy veteran and active member of the Sons of the American Revolution, genealogical societies, and the Alabama Society of Mayflower Descendants, he has spent years tracing the documented lines, family and national, that connect the present to the American founding. After learning as a young man that he was adopted, he committed the next fifty years to his own family’s documented history, a discipline that grounds America’s DNA at its core: proof over assumption, records over legend.

He lives by the beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama with his wife, Betty. America’s DNA is the first volume in The American Premise series.
